I’ve expressed my love of Yogapod before, but now I want to really share the love and tell you about some of their upcoming events:

Spiritual Cinema Circle

On Saturday, May 23, 2009 from 8:30pm – 11:30pm, you can enrich your life with other like-minded individuals. Here’s a little piece of information I obtained direct from an inside source:

Did you know that many visionary, soulful movies are made every year but never get into the theaters? Independent, spiritual filmmakers are creating movies with heart and soul, movies that really matter. Until now, though, hardly anybody got to see them.

Now, everything has changed. Now, there’s a place for you to see those inspiring, heart opening
films, right here at Yogapod. We are excited to start this cinema festival monthly beginning in May.

30 Day Challenge: June 1-30, 2009

I will completely admit to never having completed a 30 day challenge. With a small child at home and a full time job I just can’t imagine making it that much of a priority. I’m sure I’ll give it a whirl when my son is older, though. My mother in law, however, has done this several times and absolutely LOVES it! If you are into yoga and have the time, I’d totally recommend you at least try it.

You have to commit to practicing daily; I believe you can double up a class once each week (i.e. miss one day and take 2 classes the next within the same week) but you really need to dig deep to make it happen. I’m sure it’s absolutely rewarding but if you still need convincing, read this inspirational story of one man’s 30 day yoga challenge transformation.

Deepen your practice by committing to 30 days of consecutive practice for the month of June. Never practiced before? No problem, this is a great way to immerse yourself! Please call or email for any further informtation.

Contact:
Yogapod is located at 101-260 West Esplanade Street in North Vancouver, BC. Contact them at 604.924.9642 or by emailing one@yogapod.com.

By the way, if you get all inspired looking at photos of people doing yoga, you should check out Maxim Kuschpel’s entire photostream on Flickr; this set is my favourite.

Yogapod: The Local Hot Spot, Literally

I LOVE Yogapod. I don’t get there often, but I love going. For those who don’t know, Yogapod is a local Yoga studio offering a range of classes including hot yoga, power flow (vinyasa), Anusara-inspired yoga, yin, meditation, prenatal, mom & baby and seasonal specialty yoga classes. The studio is beautiful and the instructors are super encouraging. The owners, Laurie Thibeault and Todd Inouye, have done a fantastic job since the beginning it would seem.

I have not tried anything other than the hot. Well, okay, that’s not entirely true. I tried a Power Flow class one time, but I was TERRIBLE at it. No upper body strength whatsoever and it just wasn’t my style. Having said that, the Hot Yoga is a summer staple for me. Because I have a 2 year old, I have to go after he’s gone to bed at night, so the 8pm time slot is what works. Monday night is the only 8pm Hot class (which, as I said, is my favourite) so I go on Mondays throughout the summer when I don’t have band rehearsals (my usual Monday night activity).

The hot class is a 90-minute series of postures and breathing exercises done in a hot room – like 100-105 degrees Farenheit. That’s hot. For real. The first time I did it, I thought I might die, but I set my intention to stay in the room… that’s all I wanted to accomplish. After having felt the amazing sweat and realizing that I can get a total body workout some way other than the traditional gym visit I was hooked. I bought their first week for $20 deal (totally worth it given your first single drop-in class is $10 and each subsequent single drop-in class is $20) and proceeded to complete 5 classes in one week. I could literally SEE a difference in my figure in the mirror! I am not joking.

Anyway, at that point I decided I loved it and have been an on-again, off-again student since. I find the 2-hour time it takes to get there, get in and do a 90 minute class and get out is a bit much for someone such as myself who works full time and is married with a toddler i.e. has other responsibilities (mind you, I also have other recreational pursuits to take into consideration) make adding yoga as a regular part of my routine a challenge, but it’s definitely worth trying.

Here are the important details you may not know about: They offer a Saturday evening 6pm Karma class for just $5. They also offer reduced rates for students and single parents who are primary caregivers. Now that’s love. You won’t know if this is THE thing for you until you try it. Go on… try it.

Yogapod is located at 101-260 West Esplanade, across the street from Waterfront Park.

If you’re a Yogapod regular and can tell us all something about the other classes Yogapod offers, please do so in the comments. We’d love to hear from you!

Victoria’s Health: Vitamins & Supplements

I have to put a shout out to Victoria’s Health. I’ve been a fan since I lived at 17th and Lonsdale in 2002 – Victoria’s Health is located at 1637 Lonsdale Avenue, between 16th and 17th on the West side of the street – and continue to go there to get supplements when I need them.

I’m not an avid user of nutritional products and supplements, but I do like to do a cleanse every now and again. My favourite is Recleanse: It’s a very simple 7-day cleanse that includes supplements and a great meal plan (yes, you still get to eat – big thumbs up from me) and it’s about $20 at Victoria’s Health. I also was on a regular supplement after my son was born to keep my milk supply going (overshare probably, sorry ’bout that). Anyway, I have found their prices to be super reasonable (actually better than the other places I’ve been to in North Van) and their selection is awesome (read: they’ve never been out of stock for things I’ve been looking for). What cost me up to $11.99 at other stores cost me $6.99 at Victoria’s Health.

Another perk: parking out back. Though it looks less inviting to walk in at the back (you have to buzz to get in), it’s really convenient to use their parking in the alley and go in the back door; then you don’t have to worry about parallel parking on Lonsdale. Or, you can buy Victoria’s Health products online. I had no idea.

Champions Martial Arts Academy

Champions Martial Arts Academy

Here’s one of my local faves. I have to start with them but will profile other martial arts and fitness facilities in the area in due time. Disclosure statement: I’ve been a student at Champions Martial Arts Academy for 8 years or so.

Champions, located at 125 East 1st Street just off Lonsdale, offers programs for everyone ages 4 and up. The core program is based on a hard style karate-like kickboxing program under the Sport Kickboxing Federation umbrella. The curriculum includes general fitness, karate forms, kumites, techniques and sparring. The graduated belt system keeps you learning new stuff almost without realizing it, then all of a sudden you realize you can do a jump-spinning-hook-kick to head-level and you get a little rush from that.

The classes are super varied: They offer belt-level technical classes, kids classes, weapons classes, adults-only classes, personal development/leadership training, self-defense, bootcamp cardio, sparring classes and now MMA classes and parent/kid classes (I have yet to try this with my kid but might one day) and fight club – for those who want to know how ring-fighters train. Technical classes are 45-60 minutes and may include cardio, heavy-bag work, repeated techniques, general calisthenics, body conditioning, targets and stretching your mind to accomplish things you never would have thought possible. Trust me, though, if I can do it… you can do it.

As of today’s date, if you’ve never tried them out, you can go on their website at www.championswayoflife.com and sign up for a free uniform, two free private lessons and a free month of classes. Go on… give it a try! What have you got to lose?
